Free- Language Evaluation Opportunity

Event Date: 30/05/2009

If you have been learning Mandarin Chinese and are free on the morning of Saturday 30 May read on. This is the date when we are seeking volunteers to test out the new HSK examination.

The Chinese Proficiency Test HSK (Hanyu shuiping kaoshi, i.e. Chinese proficiency certificate) is the official PRC standardised exam to assess Chinese language proficiency of non-native Chinese speakers.

Hanban,(the Office of Chinese Language Council International) the body which conducts HSK,and which sponsors Confucius Institutes, has been revising the test with the aim of making it more accessible, practical and interesting to candidates. The new test will be offered at 6 levels.

Level 1 only requires that candidates master 150 words and level two only 300 words.

In order to assist Hanban to get feedback on the newly evolved test, we are going to hold exams at Level One and Two on 30th May at the Institute as a FREE trial. Attendees` papers will be formally marked and the results will be released. However, no certificate will be issued as it is only a mock-up exam

HSK is the only official Chinese language certificate accepted in mainland China. It is used by educational institutions and potential employers to:

  • certify that the holder has acquired the required Chinese proficiency to enter Chinese educational institutions as an undergraduate or postgraduate student
  • certify that the holder can be exempt from studying Chinese courses at certain levels
  • ensure suitable level of language skills as a reference point for employers recruiting non-native Chinese staff

The valuable feedback that Hanban will get from the finished exam papers will help them to develop Chinese teaching around the world. Your support and help if you could volunteer to take one of the exams would be very welcome. This also offers a good opportunity to get a sense of the new HSK, which will be implemented soon, should you need to take the exam in the future.

If you are interested in taking part in this free mock exam session please send an email to info@confuciusinstitute.ac.uk or call us on 0131 662 2180. More information will follow once you contact us. Many thanks in anticipation!

Institute Gathering in Edinburgh

Directors and staff of ten Confucius Institutes from around the UK met in Edinburgh for a full day meeting to discuss operational and development opportunities for CINUK (Confucius Institute Network, UK).

The growth of the Confucius Institute network in the UK is shown by the increased geographical spread and extended reach of the partners. With ten tertiary education based Institutes now in the UK and twenty Confucius Classrooms across the country, demand in this area is one which, against most trends, is expanding. This expansion is mirrored elsewhere in the world with new partnerships being established which will take the number of Institutes to around 300.

By working together CINUK members aim to manage costs, expand the programme of activities and share knowledge and best practice with each other.

Beijing: Third Confucius Institute Conference

A second accolade for excellence to the Confucius Institute for Scotland was awarded in Beijing.

Principal, Professor Sir Timothy O`Shea addressed the global audience of over 1000 delegates representing almost 300 Institutes. In his speech he gave his views on the function of Confucius Institutes.

“Confucius Institutes not only promote knowledge about China, they can also serve as a platform facilitating engagement and mutual exchange of ideas.

China today has a focused and strategic approach to science and innovation. It has world class universities, there have been dramatic increases in educational funding at every level. Only an open, diverse and globally engaged innovation system, which directs its energies towards shared global problems such as climate change, public health etc., will benefit China and also the wider world.

Confucius Institutes, set up in partnerships with Chinese Universities and backed by the Chinese and local governments can serve as strategic points to foster research links and exploit these links to best effect.”

Just the ticket for Garrow of Glasgow

Thursday 13th proved to be lucky for Garrow Ltd, one of the 160 companies that registered to attended a China expert panel event organised by the Confucius Institute for Scotland as a finale to the business programme of China Now in Scotland.

Director Bob Garrow attended the Glasgow event with a number of specific questions regarding his ambition to access the China water processing market and was delighted when his number was drawn to win two Business Class return tickets from Scotland to any destination in China served by Lufthansa.

`We supply treatment plants which only require energy. One is a new but proven technology to clean up drinking water; the other is a different technology which cleans up waste water for reuse or safe release to the environment. Both are avaiable at a fraction of the capital costs of traditional method technologies and without the need for expensive built infrastructure.

I came along to this event because I was aware that, because there is no choice, most of China’s one billion people are drinking water which is not clean. We supply a new but proven technology to clean up drinking water as well as a different technology which cleans up waste water for reuse or safe release to the environment. Both are avaiable at a fraction of the capital costs of traditional method technologies and without the need for expensive built infrastructure.

This event was particularly valuable because the panel, while stressing the differences, difficulties and distances, identified that success was possible and pointed me towards helpful resources.

Winning return tickets to China was most welcome and certainly reduces the distance factor. Anyone who can help me deliver these products to the chinese market is welcome but must not expect a free ride!`

Lufthansa which offers flights to Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Nanjing and Shenyang is the airline sponsor of China Now in Scotland. Lufthansa not only provided the tickets for this prize draw, but also provided a number of tickets from China to Scotland which were used to bring over visiting artists taking part in China Now in Scotland.

China Now in Scotland ran from February – November 2008. Over the ten months there have been over 150 events attended by over 70,000 people.
