Chinese Language Class - Upper Advanced

Course Summary

The goal of this course is to develop students’ ability to understand and use Chinese language at an advanced level and to help students to gain insights about Chinese society and culture through readings and discussions. This course focuses on in-depth reading of authentic materials from a wide variety of topics including social, cultural and journalistic texts. Conversational exercises remain an important part of this course, which are related to reading materials used in class and according to students’ interests. Students are also encouraged to read Chinese authentic materials after class and share vocabularies and expressions with their classmates.

Learning Contents

  • Vocabulary building and conversation/passage construction related to topics covered in class;
  • Nuances between synonyms;
  • Opportunities of free talk in Chinese for each student each week;
  • Discussions and debates in Chinese on various topics

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Comprehend (abridged/slightly revised) authentic materials on various topics;
  • Express in Chinese their thoughts and opinions more confidently and fluently in conversations and writings;
  • Gain more information about Chinese culture and society;
  • Study autonomously beyond class

Teaching Methods

The course is tutorial based with a combination of joint class activities and group work. All materials are prepared by the teacher. To benefit fully from the course and to achieve the learning outcomes, students are strongly encouraged to spend at least 1-2 hours to revise each class.
