Chinese Language Class - Elementary 1

Course Summary

This course is a continuation from Beginners 3. The emphasis remains on the development of listening and speaking skills. More complex grammatical structures will be introduced, which will enable students to talk about events taking place in the past and those in progress. Students will also be able to engage in discussion of a wider range of everyday topics. Teachers will give more guidance and assistance to help students in recognising and writing Chinese characters.

Learning Contents

  • Vocabulary building and conversation/ short paragraph construction related to topics covered in the textbook;
  • 了 used to indicate the completion of an action or the realisation of an event;
  • 在 and 正在to indicate ongoing actions;
  • 是…的structure used to highlight details regarding past events;
  • Verb phrases and clauses used as attributives;
  • Verb-object compounds;
  • 得 + predicative complement to express one’s comments/descriptions on an action

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course students will be able to:

  • Talk about one’s health;
  • State times, locations and means of actions;
  • Make comments on situations and express compliments;
  • Describe past events;
  • Describe events in progress;
  • Compose complex sentences with attributive clauses

Teaching Methods

The course is tutorial based with a combination of joint class activities and group work. Supplementary material is prepared by the teacher. To benefit fully from the course and to achieve the learning outcomes, students are strongly encouraged to spend at least 1-2 hours to revise each class.
