The Confucius Institute for Scotland at the University of Edinburgh is pleased to announce the 8th Conference on Chinese Teaching in Scotland – AI and the Future of International Chinese Language Education: Innovations, Challenges and Opportunities. This Conference will take place at the University of Edinburgh on the 26th and 27th of June 2025.
This conference is organised and hosted by the Confucius Institute for Scotland at the University of Edinburgh, co-organised by the Institute for Language Education and Asian Studies within the School of Literatures Languages and Cultures at the University of Edinburgh and the International Cultural Exchange School, Fudan University, China.
The University of Edinburgh founded in 1582 is one of the four oldest universities in Scotland. Edinburgh is a member of several associations of research universities, including the Coimbra Group, the League of European Research Universities, and Russell Group. The University of Edinburgh has 19 Nobel Prize winners, four Pulitzer Prize winners, three Turing Award winners, and an Abel Prize laureate and Fields Medallist. It is ranked 27th in the 2025 QS World University Rankings. The Confucius Institute for Scotland at the University of Edinburgh is an educational and cultural institution established in 2006 together with Fudan University and the support of CLEC (formerly Hanban). The Institute offers a wide range of Chinese training courses and promotes collaboration between Scotland and China in language, education and culture.
Established in 2020 at the University of Edinburgh, the Institute for Language Education (ILE) within Moray House School of Education and Sport, challenges ways of thinking about theory and practice in interpreting language education as critical transformative praxis that enables educators to bring about social change to educational institutions across the world. The Institute for Language Education offers large-scale, world-class masters’ programmes in: Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages – TESOL (MSc); Language Education (MSc); and, Language and Intercultural Communication (MSc). The Institute for Language Education is research intensive in bringing together a broad range of fields into three key groupings: Language(s), Interculturality and Literacies.
Founded in 1905 and located in Shanghai, Fudan University is the first institution of higher education founded by the common Chinese. With a world-class reputation, Fudan university is ranked 39th in the 2025 QS World University Rankings. The International Cultural Exchange School (ICES) is the professional institution for providing Chinese language and culture education to international students at Fudan University. It is one of the earliest institutions in China to accept foreign students and has proudly maintained a tradition of excellence in international education since the 1950’s. ICES has a remarkable faculty with diverse academic background, ranging from literature, linguistics, cultural study, history, and philosophy to economics, management and international relations. Every year, more than 1000 international students from over 100 countries study with ICES’s “mini-United Union”.
We invite submission of abstracts for conference oral presentation (25 minutes), workshops and/or panel discussions (60-minutes). Every abstract submitted will be peer reviewed and a selection of papers will be published in the Conference Proceeding. The working languages for this conference are English and Chinese.
The theme for this conference emphasises the impact of artificial intelligence on teaching and learning Chinese as a global language. We particularly welcome submissions in the following areas:
1. AI-driven pedagogical innovations in curriculum or course design
2. AI-integrated language teaching and learning materials
3. AI and cross-cultural communication in Chinese language learning
4. Challenges and ethical considerations in language assessment
