Chinese Language Class - Beginners 3

Course Summary

This course is the continuation of Beginners 2. The emphasis remains on continuing development of listening and speaking skills. More expressions regarding calendar time and locations will be introduced so that students will be able to include more details in conversations. More complex grammar, including function words indicating a change of situation and past experience, will be touched upon. There will also be more notes helping students to learn more about Chinese society and culture. Students continue to be encouraged to recognise and write Chinese characters.

Learning Contents

  • Expressions of calendar time;
  • Expressions used to describe one’s appearance ;
  • Expressions regarding directions, locations and existence;
  • 过indicating past experience;
  • 了indicating a change to situation

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Express times correctly and fluently;
  • Describe one’s appearance;
  • Ask for and give directions;
  • Describe locations and existence;
  • Talk about holiday plans;
  • Compose simple sentences with function words 过and 了

Teaching Methods

The course is tutorial based with a combination of joint class activities and group work. Supplementary material is prepared by the teacher. To benefit fully from the course and to achieve the learning outcomes, students are strongly encouraged to spend at least 1-2 hours revising each class.
