The Orchestra

Based within the China Music Institute in Peking University the orchestra enjoys great support from CMI which is also host to a symphony orchestra, a philarmonic chorus and an accapella choir.

The Chinese Orchestra

The roots of the Chinese Music Institute in Peking University can be traced back to 1916 when the Peking University Music Society was established. It has grown in size and reputation with the backing of the Principal of the Peking University, Dr. Qifeng Zhou who not only named the Institute but oversaw the expansion into a complete orchestra, including brass, woodwind, string, and percussion sections. Though the members are mainly students it enjoys excellent support and assistance from a group of renowned musicians who are senior advisors and resident composers.

In line with Peking University’s spirit of openness, equality, progress, and creativity the Chinese Music Institute links up with other universities and music academies to create a platform for interaction and increase understanding and enjoyment of Chinese music.

This is the orchestra’s first visit to the UK.
