Standard Life's reflections on doing business in China

Nathan Parnaby, Standard Life

Nathan joined Standard Life in 1982 and quickly assumed the role of Investment Manager responsible for all UK net funds. In 1995 Nathan took on responsibility for all of Standard Life’s retail funds and the following year, ownership for all external funds and business development. In 1998 he was appointed a Director of Standard Life Investments. In 2003 Nathan joined the main group as Managing Director, Sales. In 2007 he was promoted to Chief Executive, Europe and in February 2010 he became Chief Executive, International.

Nathan is currently responsible for Standard Life’s Asian and emerging markets business, which includes joint venture businesses in India and China, Standard Life Asia Ltd based in Hong Kong, and Standard Life International, which is headquartered in Ireland and has a regional office in Singapore.  Nathan is a member of Standard Life’s group executive committee. 

Nathan began his career at UBS Phillips and Drew in 1980, the same year he graduated from Oxford University.  He first visited China in 1985 and has been a regular visitor ever since.

Lecture synopsis

Nathan will share from his experience of doing business in China over the years, including the development since 2004 of Standard Life’s joint venture with Tianjin Economic Development Agency (TEDA), Heng An Standard Life (HASL).  HASL distributes a range of individual savings, investment and protection products, as well as group protection products, through the three state banks, and via an employed sales force.  From an initial base in Tianjin, HASL is now established in 10 branches and 30 major cities.

Nathan has been visiting China since 1985 and will discuss how doing business in China has changed as the country has opened up, the lessons he has learned, and the key components he feels are necessary to successfully do business there.
