Traditional Chinese Medicine
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an ancient form of treating the human body. It was developed in China over 2,000 years ago. Traditional Chinese medicine is based on the belief that all processes taking place in the human body are interrelated. This is possible through a system of channels and collaterals in the human body which form a complex network connected with veins and arteries and encompassing the whole human body.
Not only different parts of the human body depend on one another but they are also constantly interacting with the outside environment. Being healthy means not only that all the channels of the body are functioning properly but also that the body is in a harmonious and balanced relationship with the outside world. Being ill is understood as a disharmony between the human body and the environment. The relationship between negative and positive elements influencing the functioning of the whole body is represented through the symbolism of Ying and Yang.
Traditional Chinese medicine tries to correct this disharmony using herbal medicines and various medical treatments which may include acupuncture, massage and cupping.
Traditional Chinese Medicine has its origins in the philosophy of Taoism and other philosophical frameworks and draws on them when diagnosis are made.
