MASK MAKING

Step 1 Watch the film 'King of Masks'

Research the tradition of Chinese Opera Masks on the internet and download your favourite mask images from:

and

Mask Making

Step 2 Research
Trace the traditional design and then make painted colour studies to plan the 3D mask.

Step 3 To build up a papier-mache mask

Use a mask template. Wear latex gloves if needed and build up layers using strips of newspaper or newsprint with cellulose paste and PVA mix. Features such as the lips can be built up using scrunched up tissue paper and further layers of newsprint over the top. Leave the mask to dry for 3 days.

Step 4 Painting
Re-draw the design on the mask and carefully paint the mask.
Remove from the template and add 2 holes and elastic or string to fasten the mask round the head.

Step 5 Create your own Chinese Opera Mask design

Talk about symbolism/ mood/ drama of line, colour and shape and then create your own design. Annotate your 2D design of the mask with your own descriptor and explanations.
