Take the chance to immerse yourself in the Chinese language with our twice weekly Chinese language course for complete beginners. Studying for 10 evening over just five weeks you will have 20 hours of teaching covering the course materials for Chinese 1.1 – the first course in our progressive Chinese language learning programme. Designed for complete beginners with little or no knowledge of Chinese language this five week course of two classes per week runs on Monday and Thursday evenings at the Institute. On completion of this 20 hour programme of study over 5 weeks with two 2-hour classes per week, students will be able to:
- Master Pinyin, the Chinese pronunciation system
- Use simple greetings and make basic conversations
- Recognise up to 120 Chinese characters and know how to write them
Students who complete this course can move onto Chinese 1.2 in the autumn term from September 2015.
Students will work on development of basic pronunciation skills, character writing and learn vocabulary for use in social situations in Chinese.

Teaching Method (s)
The course is tutorial based with a combination of whole class activity and group work. Supplementary material is prepared by the teacher. In order to fully benefit from the course and to achieve the learning outcomes, students are expected to spend 1-2 hours per class on revision and homework.
The book used for this course is Wu Zhongwei, Contemporary Chinese for Beginners, Beijing: Sinolingua, 2010. This course book covers two years of learning. The charge for the textbook, workbook and character book is £25. Summer course students can opt to request photocopies for this term only.
