Lianghui, or Two Sessions, are the biggest political meetings of the year in China. As the name implies, Lianghui includes two different meetings: the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and the National People’s Congress (NPC).
These national meetings take place in Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, usually around March (a tradition which began in 1985). This year, however, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the meetings have been postponed and will start from the 21st of May. According to Chinese political tradition, municipal and provincial level versions precede these major national meetings.
Lianghui draws worldwide media attention, providing a window for the world to glimpse the future direction of China’s social and economic development. With the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic, there will be a lot to expect from this year’s Lianghui.
