New teaching staff arrive from China

Following a delayed arrival due to the recent volcanic dust problems two new new teaching staff, Zhao Xueqian and He Jin will take up teaching duties this week.

Both staff are fully qualified and experienced teachers of Chinese as a foreign language and are delighed to have joined the Institute for a period of up to two years.

Zhao Xueqian, a doctor in traditional Chinese literature has been teaching Chinese language and Chinese culture to foreign students in the International Culture Exchange School of Fudan University since 1998 when she graduated from the Institute of Ancient Chinese Book Studies, Fudan University. In 2003-2004 she worked with the Department of Chinese Studies in Stockholm University. Zhao Xueqian has published works on traditional Chinese gardens, Chinese traditional literature and Chinese language studies.

He Jin took her MA(2005)degree at Fudan University, where she studied Chinese language and culture. She has been working in teaching and researching in the International Cultural Exchange School of Fudan University since 2005. Currently she is studying for her PhD candidate, majoring in Modern Chinese Linguistics, at Fudan University.

She is interested in the teaching Chinese as the second language and research on improving efficiency of second language acquisition.

Director Natascha Gentz said `The quality of the language teachers sent to us by the Institute`s academic partner Fudan University is very high. Zhao Xuequian and He Jin are most warmly welcomed to the Institute, to the University of Edinburgh and to Scotland.
