Three day calligraphy course 7-9 July, 2010

A three day traditional Chinese Art workshop for beginners focusing on calligraphy and brush painting from 7-9 July is the first confirmed course of the summer 2010 programme.

For centuries painting, calligraphy, and seal carving have been the mark of a true Chinese scholar. Join us in July when over three days you will have the opportunity to learn and practice the art of Chinese brush writing, brush painting and can even carve a personal `seal`.

Calligraphy workshop (Day 1):

Learn the Art of traditional Chinese calligraphy from pictographic characters to abstract characters. Discover the beauty of Chinese calligraphy by using a Chinese brush.

This workshop will introduce the craft implements, known as the four treasures: Brush, Ink, Ink stone, Rice Paper. The workshop will include practice of very basic strokes, initially creating simple characters before progressing to allow each student to create their own Chinese characters and symbols for good fortune and prosperity.

Chinese Painting workshop (Day 2):

Chinese Brush Painting uses the same implements as Chinese Calligraphy, with the addition of simple colour.

This workshop will introduce common techniques related to the use of Chinese soft brushes and ink. Students can choose which subject to paint following a demonstration by the teacher. Choose from a Lotus flower, an Orchid, Bamboo or Landscape painting. In this workshop everyone will have a chance to produce their own piece of artwork.

Chinese Seal Carving Workshop (Day 3):

This workshop will allow participants to discover the ancient practice of seal carving. Historically, seals were carved on stone or marble to represent eternal love. Seals make unusual gifts for friends and family.

This discipline has a venerable history and seal stamps, also known as ‘chops’, are still in regular use in China, both to enhance artwork and as part of the requirement for the signing of important documents.
Each seal is unique and will contain e.g. a name, poetical saying, a design or a symbol. The seals are pressed into a pot or tin of cinnebar paste, a scarlet red colour, which is then block printed onto plain paper or used on a Valentine`s card, wedding card, letters or even books. When printing a red seal on a monochrome painting, it is said to be `adding the eye to the dragon`. When entering China, your passport will be stamped with a red seal.

Students will learn how to write Chinese characters in seal and practice Chinese calligraphy; be introduced to the basic knife technique and learn how to make a carving

Each student will create and take away their own Chinese style seal from this day of the workshop.

Our workshop leader, Zhang Chi, Edinburgh based Chinese Calligraphy & Brush Painting artist, is an experienced art tutor, whose works have been exhibited internationally.

The price for this three day workshop is £190 inclusive of all materials and lunches. The workshop will take place in Abden House, home of the Confucius Institute running from 10am-4pm each day.
