What future for China and Central Asia ? - double-bill book event at the Book Festival. With Inside Central Asia, renowned political writer and historian Dilip Hiro offers a lucid narrative that places the present-day politics and peoples of Central Asia and its neighbours into an international context. Meanwhile, Jonathan Fenby’s Tiger Head, Snake Tails looks at the future of China without resorting to the standard black and white story which insists that the country will either collapse or eventually rule the world.

Classical zheng performer, Yi Dong, is the most celebrated international soloist, of any Chinese national musical instrument, of her generation. Playing the zheng (zither), she makes her annual return to Edinburgh to give us a concert of the music of the many love stories of China. Part of the Glamour of Jasmine Chinese Arts Festival.

Appearing at St Cuthbert`s Parish Church just off Lothian Road her show runs 12.30-13.30 with tickets priced at £9 (£7).

In memory of theatre director and playwright Ohta Shogo, the physical performance, e-Station, experiments with extreme slowness and quietness that has become the trademark of Ohta.

In e-Station, the complex relationship between the human body and electronic products is examined. During the rehearsals, the performers interacted with various public spaces: corridors, lobbies, busy streets, and parks, silently transforming them into new social spaces. Theatre is transformed by their performance, with the aid of experimental sounds and videos, breaking down its walls and connecting it to the reality outside.

For one night only - Young China Shines

Shanghai Jinshan Student Art Troupe make their Edinburgh Fringe debut in a two-hour, one-day only performance showcasing un-seen art and culture from Young China Shines Shanghai. Inspired by the famous farmer’s paintings of the region, dance, music, singing and martial arts are fused to depict scenes of daily life, incorporating ancient traditional Chinese instruments and awe inspiring performances from over 40 students. Part of the China Fringe Festival, the evening begins at 6.30pm with a free one-hour reception where the public is invited to participate in traditional Chinese arts and crafts including paper cutting, calligraphy and painting.

The show itself runs from 7.30-9.30pm and tickets are priced at only £5 on a 2 for 1 basis meaning each ticket costs only £2.50.

The first of this year`s Fringe shows from China is a spectacular dance and physical theatre show presented by Beijing Students Golden Sail Art Troupe this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 3,4,5 August at venue 82, Zoo Southside

With only 5 shows offered over three days don`t miss this Edinburgh debut for an award-winning young Chinese company. A packed and spectacularly varied programme combining the finest traditional Chinese dance with a diverse array of international styles, delivered with passion and exuberance by Beijing`s rising dance and music talents. The show features inspirational and rejuvenating performances encompassing modern and time-honoured Chinese dances and costumes, as well as tap and Irish folk! The Golden Sail Troupe has performed around the world, with audiences including the Pope, members of UNESCO and the WHO, and the Beijing Olympic Games.

Suitable for all the family, choose from the morning show at 11am show or the late night slot which starts at 22.45pm show. Each show lasts 40 minutes. Tickets are priced at £10 (£8).
