Friday Film `A Sigh` (2000) - 27 Feb 09
The Sigh was directed by Feng Xiaogang
It tells of an affair of a young struggling screenwriter and the effect this has on both the man himself and his family. .
This Friday film will be screened as usual in the basement of the David Hume Tower, George Square, University of Edinburgh.
Screenings start at 2pm. No reservation necessary, no admission fee.

Inaugural Lecture by Prof Gentz, 24 Feb 09
Director of the Scottish Centre for Chinese Studies and the Confucius Institute for Scotland in the University of Edinburgh, Professor Natascha Gentz will deliver a special lecture on Tuesday 24 February.
Entitled, ‘The Birth of Tragedy in China: Global Routes of a Local Genre’ the lecture will take place at 5.15pm in lecture theatre B of the David Hume Tower, George Square. A reception will follow. If you would like to attend this lecture please email patricia.mcclory@ed.ac.uk

In this story of a Chinese family which spans the decades from 1940s-70s, Director Zhang Yimou shows how the family triumph over political and physical hardships.
Winner of the Grand Prize in the 1994 Cannes Film Festival as well as Best Foreign Language Film at the 1995 BAFTAs.

Chinese Concert, Cocktail and Canape at Oran Mor 9 Feb

In the series `A Concert, a Cocktail and a Canape` at Oran Mor on Monday, February 9th at 6pm the Harmony Chinese music ensemble will perform with the Scottish Philharmonic Orchestra in a concert to celebrate the 2009 Chinese New Year - the Year of the Ox. The programme will include Air and Dances (茉莉花, 紫竹调 and 喜洋洋), Kangding Love Song (康定情歌), Zweisamkeit V by Kimho Ip and 关山月 , an ancient Chinese melody arranged by Kimho Ip (Hong Kong born composer who studied at Edinburgh University) as well as an improvisation and the singing of Fong Liu. The conductor will be Peter Jones.

Chinese New Year Event- Sun 8 Feb, Edinburgh
Celebrate the Year of the Ox with music, dance, calligraphy, art and animation at Edinburgh`s National Museum of Scotland.
Harmony Ensemble will be collaborating with members of the Intercultural Music and Arts Project (iMAP) to put on an interactive Chinese New Year celebration. We will perform Chinese New Year music and collaborate with the children`s drumming group from Ipswich Community Radio. The children are between four and twelve years old and the group will be led by Lydia, a special guest from Hong Kong.
Come along to enjoy the special atmosphere or even take part in an open workshop of drumming and movement? Take part in Chinese activities and collect the stamps. Get them all and win a Chinese New Year souvenir!
This drop in, free event at the National Museum of Scotland will run from 12.30 till 16.00 and is suitable for everyone.
