Chinese 1 Classes - Winter 2013

For complete beginners and basic users of the language.

This beginners level course uses Great Wall Chinese, volumes 1-3. The first book is completed over two terms. Additional volumes two and three each will take one term of study. Students will acquire the basics of the language from the first term and by the end of the three volumes will have acquired a good command of pinyin, useful daily expressions, and basic Chinese grammar.

For anyone who has some prior learning we are happy to provide an assessment to help ensure you are placed in the class which best suits your level.

Classes are led by the Confucius Institute teaching staff.

Chinese 1.1 Classes April-May 2013

There are two absolute beginners classes offered this term on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Running from 6pm-8pm this course is for those with no previous experience of Mandarin.

Chinese 1.2 Classes April-May 2013

Those who have completed 1.1 or equivalent (20 hours of study) can progress to Chinese 1.2. We are offering two classes at this level on Tuesday and Thursday evenings 6.00-8.00pm in the Confucius Institute.

Chinese 1.3 Classes April-May 2013

Those who have completed 1.2 or equivalent (40 hours of study) can progress to Chinese 1.3. This class operates on a Thursday evening from 6.00-8.00pm at the Confucius Institute.

Teaching method

All classes ares tutorial based with a combination of whole class activity and group work. Students will be provided with written and audio materials as learning aids.

In order to fully benefit from the course and to achieve the learning outcomes, students should ideally spend 1-2 hours outwith classes on revision and homework.

Attendance

Students are expected to enrol for one class and attend this class regularly. If a student misses their regular class they may be able to attend an alternative class at the same level in the same week if timetabled and if numbers allow. Classes start week beginning Monday 22 April 2013 and end week beginning Monday 24 June 2013.

Price

The cost for a full term (ten or 11 weeks) is £125. A concessionary rate of £83 is available if:

  • Your / your family's sole income is Department for Work and Pensions benefits
  • You are in receipt of pension credit
  • You are a full time student

Please note all classes are subject to minimum numbers.
