'Essence of China: Golden Triangle Tour’
There is much to be fascinated by in China. Join us in July for our Insight Evening Programme to discover the Golden Triangle cities of Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai.
As well as introducing the main tourist sites of each city, the course will explain social aspects of life in China today.
Course Overview
Each evening we will focus on history, culture, sightseeing, entertainment and local food in one of the Golden Triangle cities of Beijing, Xi’an, and Shanghai. The fourth class will present an overview of China under the title ‘Opening and Reform: what was then, what is now.’
Evenings will also include music and pictures that will illuminatet he local culture of each city. With the opportunity for questions and knowledge sharing you will gain perspectives on contemporary Chinese life revealed through the course and our course leader, Wei Zhou.
Course Content Details
Beijing: Colourful and bustling, Beijing is the political and cultural centre of the country with a rich history. As well as being introduced to the history of the city and its main sites, Wei Zhou, our course leader, will share with you varying social aspects of Beijing from hutongs to contemporary arts. Aspects of life for the residents such as local food and daily activities will also be shared.
Shanghai: The largest economic and trade centre of the country Shanghai is a modern and dynamic city which for many is a shopping paradise. With insights given into the various influences that have shaped the city, this session will also reveal where to shop, where to absorb culture and how to enjoy the local food including the delicious Xiaolong baozi – steamed bun; Dazha xie – hairy crabs; and Chou doufu – smelly tofu!
Xi’an: Famous for its Terracotta Warriors this ancient city is re-inventing itself as a major centre for higher education while maintaining its links with the past. Situated on the threshold to the Midwest of the country, this historical city served as capital to 13 feudal dynasties. Focusing on the long Tang dynastic history and life in the Muslim quarter of this city, Xi’an is a fascinating destination with its own local food and lifestyle.
Opening and Reform: This final class will highlight the change and development of China in the last 30 years of reform and opening. The session will look at five themes before concluding with useful general information for travel in China including climate, transport, etiquette etc.

This course will be led by Wei Zhou, whose knowledge, enthusiasm and preparations will ensure the class is worthwhile and enjoyable.

The cost for the eight hour / four week programme is £35 per person. You can also select from the programme at a cost of £10 per person per evening.
